Every dwelling and business in the Municipality has or should have a civic number. This civic number is the identification number that emergency response providers use to locate your property. When a call is placed to 911 or an emergency response provider, the dispatcher is at most times automatically aware of your civic number, as the number is linked to the phone number (unless there is no phone, or the caller is using a cell phone). Emergency response providers rely on you as a homeowner or business, to post a civic number as this enables the emergency vehicle driver to locate your property. The failure to post a civic number may mean the difference between life and death.

As of September 1, 2013, a civic address bylaw has taken effect. This bylaw makes it mandatory to post all civic number and private road name signs. The new Civic Addressing By-law addresses general issues such as who assigns civic numbers, how they are issued, and naming or changing of road names. The by-law provide standards on where and how you should locate civic numbers and private road name signs.

Even if you have your civic number or road name sign posted, take a moment and see if it meets the criteria set out in the by-law.
