Starting in 2005, the Municipality has received a measure of gas tax collected by the federal government and then re-distributed to provinces across Canada. The Province of Nova Scotia, in turn, created Municipal Funding Agreements with each municipal unit, so as to provide a source of ongoing, stable funds for municipal infrastructure.

The current Agreement is scheduled to end in March, 2014. In 2011, legislation was passed to make the federal Gas Tax Fund permanent at $2 billion per year.
