There are some items that are commonly misplaced in the recycling stream: small appliances are one of them.
You might have heard the rule, "if it is clean and plastic, it can be recycled." This is not the case for items such as egg beaters, blenders, or toasters. It may be plastic or metal on the outside, but on the inside it can contain electrical wiring, motors, or multiple other components that are not recyclable. At the end of their useable life, small appliances belong in the garbage.
Also, keep in mind that there is a difference between appliances and electronics. In Nova Scotia, we have a fantastic recycling program for electronics (computers and computer accessories). If you are unsure if you have an electronic or an appliance, check out the Atlantic Canada Electronics Stewardship website at http://www.acestewardship.ca or call us 543-2991.
