Waste Reduction

The less waste you produce, the less you have to sort.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle—it’s the first of the ‘3 Rs’ for a good reason. The less waste we produce, the less waste there is to landfill, and less energy used to recycle it.

There are a lot of ways you can reduce your waste. Check out these tips:

  • Use rechargeable batteries. The initial cost of the batteries may seem high, but compared to repeatedly buying batteries every few months, they quickly pay for themselves.
  • If you are moving, don’t buy new boxes. Instead ask around for local businesses to save you their shipping boxes.
  • Check with local repair shops to see if they can use your old appliances for spare parts.
  • 55 million plastic bags are thrown away in Canada every week. Choose a re-useable cloth bag to carry your groceries or when doing Christmas shopping.
  • If hosting a party or dinner for friends, use reusable plates, cups, silverware and napkins.
