As part of the efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg's Administration Building is closed. Our current plan is to re-open June 1; however, we will be reassessing as necessary.

Recreation, Parks and Trails

All recreational programming, and programming at the MARC building has been cancelled.

We will be opening our parks on our regular seasonal opening day of Saturday, May 16, with some exceptions.

Pine Grove Outdoor Play Park will remain closed, as will the MARC ballfields. Additionally, all public washrooms will be closed, as we are not able to clean them with the frequency required by provincial guidelines at this time. We are working towards a solution that will allow us to open these washrooms. All beaches remain closed, and all playground equipment remains closed.

Social distancing restrictions are still in place at our parks and on trails. Gatherings of more than five people are prohibited, and you must stay six feet apart from people who are not part of your household.

Building Inspections and Development

Urgent building inspections will be prioritized and completed during the closure. If you have an urgent building inspection or dangerous premises inspection, please call (902) 541-1325 to book.

We are still accepting building permit applications while our office is closed. Email your application to This email address is being protected from spambots. Fees can be paid by cheque, either dropped off in the night drop box at 210 Aberdeen Road or by mailing. When applying for a Building Permit remotely you MUST contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or 902-541-1325 (leave a voicemail) to determine the correct fee before mailing or dropping off payment for a building permit application. Building permit applications submitted with incorrect amounts will require correct payment before your application will be processed.

Taxes

In order to offset the financial impact on residents and businesses during the COVID-19 situation, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg will delay the interim tax deadline by 90 days.

The interim tax deadline has been moved from May 31, 2020 to August 31, 2020. If your account includes arrears, daily interest will continue to be applied on those arrears. Interest on the newly issued interim invoice will not be applied until September 1, 2020. We encourage those residents who are able to pay their tax bill upon receipt to do so.

Interim tax bills have been mailed. While our office is still closed, you can make your tax payment by mail, drop box at our office, at your bank, or through online or telephone banking.

Please note that payments made at a bank, online or via telephone banking will take up to 3 days to reach us.

Receipts for payments made can be issued upon request. Please call (902) 541-1348 and leave a message. Staff will return your call. Receipts can be issued by email or mail.

We encourage those residents who are able to pay their tax bill upon receipt to do so.

Do you pay your property taxes by TIPP? We have an important notice for those who have signed up to have your tax bill payment automatically withdrawn from your bank account on the due date.

If you have signed up for the full amount of your tax bill to be withdrawn on the due date, the due date has been delayed from May 31 to August 31.

The full amount of your tax bill will be withdrawn on August 31.

Are you applying for the 2020-21 Property Tax Rebate? For the 2020-21 fiscal year, you do not require a Commissioner of Oaths to sign your Statutory Declaration. An unsworn Statutory Declaration will be accepted for the 2020-21 fiscal year only.

Criminal Record Checks

If you require a criminal record check, we have waived the fee, and the RCMP have been advised that no payment is required.

Fire Departments

In response to the COVID-19 situation, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg will extend the deadline for the submission of the 2020/21 registration packages for the fire and emergency services providers and the date for ratepayer meetings until August 15, 2020 for the 2020/21 fiscal year. Fire departments are discouraged from holding their ratepayer meetings until the province lifts the State of Emergency, and/or permits large gatherings of people.

The 2019/20 registration status of current fire and emergency services providers will also be extended until the 2020/21 registration packages have been processed.
