New Councillor elected for District 9

The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg is pleased to announce that Ben Floyd has been elected by acclamation as Councillor for District 9.

Nominations for the District 9 by-election officially closed today, September 22, 2026. As only one candidate was nominated, a by-election will not be required and no voting will take place.

Mr. Floyd will officially assume the role of District 9 Councillor upon taking the Oath of Office and will begin serving the residents of District 9.

The Municipality extends its appreciation to Mr. Floyd and everyone who expressed interest in the by-election process and to residents for their continued engagement in local government.

A swearing-in ceremony has been scheduled for October 13, 2026.

On September 8, 2026, Council conducted First Reading of proposed amendments to the Osprey Village Secondary Planning Strategy and Land Use By-law affecting municipally owned land identified as PID 60631009. The proposed amendments would redesignate and rezone portions of the property from the High-Density Residential zone to General Commercial and Open Space zones. The amendments would also permit development using on-site services.

A Public Information Session will be held to provide residents with an opportunity to learn more about the proposed changes.

Public Notice: Odours at wastewater treatment plant

The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg is aware of odours being noticed near the Cookville Wastewater Treatment Plant and understands the concerns this may cause for those travelling through or spending time in the area.

The wastewater treatment plant is fully operational and continues to treat wastewater as designed. The facility remains under construction, however, with components of the odour control system still being installed. The contractor has been made aware of the concerns and is investigating the odour control equipment while work continues to complete the system.

Resolution of the odour concerns is anticipated within the next two weeks as the remaining work is completed. In the meantime, people in the vicinity may continue to notice occasional odours.

We appreciate the public's patience as the project team works to complete construction and address the issue.

Audit Committee Meeting - Sep 22, 2026

This Notice is to advise residents that the Audit Committee will be meeting prior to the regularly scheduled Council Committee meeting on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 at 8:30 a.m. to review the Treasurer’s Report and MODL’s draft Financial Statements for the year ending March 31, 2026.

Public hearing set for proposed Osprey Village planning amendments

The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg is inviting residents to a public hearing regarding proposed amendments to the Osprey Village Secondary Planning Strategy and Land Use By-law affecting municipally owned land identified as PID 60631009.

At its September 8 meeting, Council approved moving the proposed amendments forward and set a public hearing for October 13, 2026, at 5:30 p.m.

The proposed amendments would redesignate and rezone portions of the property from High-Density Residential to General Commercial and Open Space zones. The amendments would also permit development using on-site services.

The property was originally intended for high-density residential development supported by future municipal water and wastewater services. As municipal servicing is no longer planned for the site, Council is considering amendments that would provide a different land-use framework while retaining areas as open space.

Residents will have an opportunity to provide input before Council considers whether to approve the proposed amendments.

Affordable financing available for water supply upgrades

Access to safe, reliable drinking water is essential, but water supply challenges can place unexpected financial pressure on homeowners. To help residents improve and secure their water supply, the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg is accepting applications for its Water Supply Upgrade Program.

The program offers low-interest financing to eligible property owners for projects that improve access to potable water, including well drilling, rainwater collection and storage systems such as cisterns, well pumps, water lines, electrical connections, and other improvements that support water supply, conservation, or efficiency.

Eligible applicants may access up to $20,000 in financing at a 2% interest rate, with repayment over five years.

The program is available to owners of eligible single-unit and two-unit residential properties, as well as qualifying not-for-profit properties.

Residents interested in applying can complete the intake form online, and Municipal staff will follow up with next steps.

Help Shape Community Safety: Join the Police Advisory Board

The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg is seeking applications from residents interested in serving on the Police Advisory Board (PAB).

The Police Advisory Board works with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and Municipal Council to provide community input and help develop a vision for how policing services are delivered throughout the Municipality. The Board is established under the authority of the Nova Scotia Police Act and includes municipal councillors, citizen representatives, and an appointee of the Minister of Justice.

Serving on the Board is an opportunity to contribute to discussions about community safety, policing priorities, and issues that matter to residents.

The Municipality is currently recruiting one citizen member for a one-year term.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants must:

• Be a resident of the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg.
• Submit a letter of application that includes a brief biography and information about skills, experience, or community involvement that would contribute to the Board's work.
• Provide three professional and/or volunteer-related references.
• Consent to criminal and background checks.

Applications Open for Accessibility Advisory Committee

The Lunenburg County Accessibility Advisory Committee is seeking volunteers who are passionate about helping create more accessible and inclusive communities.

The Committee is currently recruiting two members for three-year terms and one member for a two-year term. Residents of the Municipality of the District of Chester, Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, Town of Bridgewater, Town of Lunenburg, and Town of Mahone Bay are encouraged to apply.

The Accessibility Advisory Committee provides advice to municipal councils throughout Lunenburg County on accessibility-related matters, including programs, services, initiatives, and facilities.

Committee members play an important role in helping municipalities identify and remove barriers so that everyone can fully participate in community life. The Committee also supports municipal efforts to meet the goals of Nova Scotia's Accessibility Act and move toward barrier-free communities.

Who Should Apply?

We welcome applications from individuals with diverse lived experiences, skills, and perspectives.

At least half of the Committee's membership must be persons with disabilities or representatives of organizations that support people with disabilities.
