Adopt a Highway
Community groups can channel their energy into beautifying their area by joining the Adopt a Highway Program. The program engages groups in the collection of litter along roadsides and route interchanges. The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal provide groups with equipment and assists with the pick up and disposal of collected litter in Lunenburg County. Approximately 31 groups from the Lunenburg and Queens county area participate yearly!
During the 2011 Spring litter clean up, groups collected 3695 bags of garbage and 253 bags of recyclables which amounted to 59.6 tonnes of litter!

Have you experienced illegal dumping on your property? Residents of the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg and the Towns of Lunenburg, Mahone Bay and Bridgewater can take advantage of the Illegal Dumping Tipping Fee Waiver program. It allows residents who've cleaned up illegally dumped waste from their property to dispose of it free charge. Property identification information must be provided. For more information, call 543-2991.
Residents within Lunenburg County may report illegal dumping and burning to the Nova Scotia Department of Environment at 543-4685 for investigation.

The article focuses on a particular dumpsite within the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg and provides information from the Nova Scotia Department of Environment's District Manager about reporting illegal dumping. Residents of Lunenburg County have lots of options when it comes to getting rid of unwanted items. Many websites exist which offer an opportunity to sell or give away unwanted items.
One example of website where folks may sell their items is www.kijiji.ca. A Bridgewater (and area) page is available to post items. A picture of the item for sale may be uploaded to the website for free. Residents who subscribe to www.Facebook.com may request to join the 'Bridgewater FREE ITEMS' group. Items are offered for free and ads may be posted for free.

The Appliance Retirement Program provides Nova Scotians with a convenient alternative for getting rid of old, inefficient appliances in their homes. By calling Efficiency Nova Scotia, residents can schedule an appointment to have their appliance picked-up from their home for disposal for free. In addition, homeowners will receive a rebate of up to $35 for their appliance.
