Waste will be collected as usual on Victoria Day, Monday, May 21, in the Town of Bridgewater and the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg. Residents are reminded to place their waste at the curbside by 8:00am in Bridgewater and 7:00am in the Municipality to ensure their waste is collected.

Earth Day Litter Challenge A Success!
Earth Day Litter Challenge

The 2012 Earth Day Litter Challenge was a success this year! Over 2000 residents and groups participated on April 18 and during the remainder of Earth Week. The event was organized by Region 6 Solid Waste Management and the Lunenburg Regional Community Recycling Centre, with support from several sponsors including Clean NS and GEs All Trucking.

Litter was collected along roads and in nearby parks and playgrounds. To view photos and read more, click here.

Aerosol Can Disposal Safety a Concern

aerosol cansDispose of filled or partially filled aerosol cans properly!

Filled or partially spray cans still contain pressurized gas which could explode if compressed by a waste collection truck! Residents may drop off filled or partially filled cans at the Lunenburg Regional Community Recycling Centre's Household Hazardous Waste Depot, 908 Mullock Road, Whynott's Settlement.

Completely empty aerosol cans may be placed in the blue bag.

An explosion recently occurred on a waste collection truck, as the result of filled aerosol spray cans being improperly disposed during regular waste collection. To read a newspaper article about the incident, click here.

Spring and Fall Clean Up Changes in the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg, Mahone Bay and Bridgewater

Spring and Fall Clean Up will be collected a bit differently this year. Metal will collected with other bulky landfill items, in the same pile during the first week of Municipal Clean Up. Wood only will be collected instead of metal during the second week of Clean Up.

Residents in the Towns will be asked to place their metal in their landfill pile and to make a separate pile for wood only on their scheduled Clean Up day for their area. To read more, click here.

Waste Collection Issues

As of April 1, 2012, residents of the Municipality of the District of Lunenburg and the Towns of Mahone Bay and Bridgewater will be directed to call the new waste collection issue hotline number at 1-855-530-3324 instead of the Lunenburg Regional Community Recycling Centre or their Town office.

General recycling questions may be answered by calling 543-2991.

This number is administered by GEs All Trucking, the contracted residential waste hauler for the Municipality and the two Towns. Please call this number if your waste has been missed. If your waste has been rejected, please read the rejection sticker. The Recycling Guide is a great reference for separating all of your waste at home and work. The Blue Bag Guide informs residents and businesses of what belongs in their blue bags. Blue Bag recyclables MUST BE RINSED. Bottle brushes and a quick soak with left over dish water can get even sticky and oily foods off bottles and containers.

When placing your waste for collection, please remember:

All waste must be placed at the curb by 7:00am on the day of collection in the Municipality and by 8:00am in the Towns of Bridgewater and Mahone Bay to ensure collection. Routes may be collected differently due to road and weather conditions, so waste may not always be collected at the 'usual time' in your area. These designated times are when waste collection trucks begin collecting.

Waste must be bagged and prepared properly - all organics go in the aerated green cart, recyclables go in a transparent blue bag, paper (including boxboard) goes in a clear bag or plastic shoppping bag, garbage goes in a black bag and cardboard must be broken down and tied in bundles no larger than 3 feet by 2 feet by 2 feet.

Compost Sales

Please be advised that compost will not be available for purchase this season.

Its use will be less expensive than more conventional methods of landfill remediation. For more information about this project and why we use compost, click here, or contact the Lunenburg Regional Community Recycling Centre at 543-2991.
