MUNICIPALITY OF THE DISTRICT OF LUNENBURG, NOVA SCOTIA – The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg is taking steps to address the escalating challenges of housing and food insecurity in the region. Recognizing the urgent need to support vulnerable households facing economic hardships exacerbated by post-pandemic inflation and the housing crisis, MODL Council has approved immediate relief.

At the December 12, 2023, Council meeting, Council unanimously agreed to match funds raised by a staff-led food drive, extending support to four local food banks up to a maximum of $1,000 per food bank. Moreover, to directly combat the pressing issues of homelessness and shelter shortages, Council has approved funding in the amounts of $3,000 each for the Souls Harbour Warming Centre and the overnight shelter operated by the South Shore Open Doors Association.

“The economic conditions post-pandemic has significantly impacted the stability of many households within MODL,” stated Mayor Carolyn Bolivar-Getson. “It was important for this Council to make an immediate contribution. Staff raised $1,215.00 for the New Germany Food Bank, and Council has donated an additional $1,000 for each of the four local food banks.”

This year, the New Germany Food Bank will receive $2,215.00 while the other three food banks will receive $1,000 each. Each year, staff will focus their efforts on a different food bank between the Bridgewater Food Bank, Town of Lunenburg Food Bank, New Germany Food Bank, and the Town of Mahone Bay Food Bank.

Feed NS has reported a 5% increase in food bank usage in Nova Scotia since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Shockingly, one-third of the population supported by food banks comprises children.

MODL remains committed to actively engaging with the community and collaborating with local organizations to address immediate needs and pave the way for sustainable solutions.
