The Municipality of the District of Lunenburg Council has pre-approved $2 million to make waterfront improvements at Sawpit Wharf Park, including a new wharf structure and other waterfront improvements in 2026.

In June 2024, the Municipality approved a concept plan, created with community input, that will improve the park’s waterfront, accessibility, and overall amenities. Four million dollars was included in the five-year capital plan to implement these improvements over several years.

After a recent structural assessment of the wharf, the decision was made to close the wharf immediately due to safety concerns. This assessment prompted Council to pre-approve funds to enable a design-build for a new wharf in 2026.

“Council understands that the wharf is a significant asset to the park, and one of its main attractions,” stated Mayor Elspeth McLean-Wile. “To not replace the wharf with one that will meet the current needs of park users was unthinkable. We understand this is a park feature people have come to expect. The wonderful thing about this park is the public access to the water and the great green space it provides. Council is excited for the improvements to the waterfront in 2026 and other improvements to the rest of the park that will improve accessibility and the overall user experience in the years ahead.”
